May 6 – Group glossing

Today students handed in their mind maps on their poetry terms and then read silently for 20 minutes. Next we went over the mind maps and discussed the purpose of this activity: study aid, learning aid and practice for grouping related ideas/concepts for essays etc. For the last chunk of the class, students met in groups and glossed poems they intend on writing their comparison essays on. Collaborative work is improving

May 6 – Word Master Work

Today students met in their lit circles. The students were directed to create notes on the word master words for the novel. This meant that each student wrote out the words and definitions on one piece of paper. On a second piece of paper, students wrote sentences utilizing these words. The sentence sheet was handed in and the definition sheet was put in student’s binders. The students will have a test on these words on Tuesday, so the definition sheet is their study sheet. Students also continued to organize their duotangs of their published work on their novels.

May 6 – WWI continued

Today we reviewed our notes from last day and then we continued to learn about the key battles of WWI. We also continued to investigate the technology involved in the war, especially aircrafts. Finally, we also discussed the Decades project and we looked at a few examples of “big ideas.”

May 5 – Library work period

Today students went to the library to continue to work on publishing their novel booklets. Group leaders continued to use their checklists to ensure all aspects of the project were completed.

May 5 – Poetry terms

Today after silent reading, we finished defining poetry terms. Students were assigned the job of creating a mind map of these terms. The objective was to catergorize the terms into appropriate groups. For example, poetic devices could be broken down into sound devices, comparison devices, devices using opposites etc. This web was due Friday at the beginning of class.

May 5 – WWI trench warfare

Today we started class off with a clip from the movie “All Quiet on the Western Front,” so that students could get a idea of what it would have been like to have been a soldier during WWI. Then we started writing notes on trench warfare and we started to investigate some of the important battles Canadians were involved in.

May 4 – Lit Circle Publishing

Today, students worked on typing up their lit circle work. Each group was assigned a leader to ensure that all components of the lit circle are complete.

May 4 – “Barbie Doll” Glossing

Today after silent reading, we glossed and discussed the poem “Barbie Doll.” Then students were asked to decide on what two poems they are going to compare and contrast for their essays.

GIRLS ON THE BAND TRIP: I’ll get you caught up when you get back. Just make sure you have your lit circle roles are completed for Monday and you have your reader responses ready to go. Cat, I don’t have yours from last week, so get that done too!

May 4 – Canada’s Response (WWI)

Today we discussed recent current events like the federal election and the assassination of Osama Bin Laden. We also reviewed the key reasons for the start of WWI. Finally, we wrote some notes on Canada’s respoonse to WWI.

May 3 – Glossing “Hockey”

Today after silent reading, we glossed the poem hockey. Students were also introduced to their next essay topic which is comparing and contrasting two poems of their choice from the package provided.
